From F to D: Building Instructional Coherence at Steele Creek Preparatory Academy
Steele Creek Preparatory Academy (North Carolina) faced a difficult reality. Leadership changed every year, retaining teachers was a persistent challenge, and classrooms lacked shared instructional systems. Walkthroughs were sporadic, feedback was inconsistent, and professional learning seldom reached daily practice. Students were often busy but not consistently engaged in the thinking required by grade-level standards.
SCPA began with a comprehensive needs assessment and strategic action plan. The assessment identified instructional coherence as the priority: leaders and teachers needed a shared picture of strong instruction, a common approach to planning, and reliable evidence of what students were learning.
Kaizen-ISL partnered with dedicated school leaders put high expectations for every student at the center of the work. They used four Kaizen-ISL tools as a connected system:
- SBI Walkthrough Progression Framework gave leaders a consistent lens for examining alignment, rigor, student engagement, and monitoring/CFU.
- “What” and “How” Day Planning Protocols helped teams unpack standards and design tasks that required students to read, think, speak, and write regarding critical content.
- Feedback and Coaching Loop turned classroom evidence into specific, actionable support for teachers.
- Student Work Product Analysis Protocol showed whether student work reflected the depth of the standard and the intent of the lesson.
The power came from using these tools consistently. Collaborative planning shaped lessons. Walkthroughs gathered evidence. Coaching helped teachers refine their practice. Student work showed leaders and teachers where to adjust.
In the first year of partnership, SCPA moved from an F to a D school grade. Progress reflects the commitment of leaders and teachers who sustained their focus through turnover and uncertainty. Their work demonstrates what a coherent plan, elevated expectations, and consistent support can make possible for students.
