Empowering those ready to lead.

The Journey That Shaped My Leadership Convictions

It all began 20 years ago when I was appointed principal of an underperforming inner-city middle school. That induction into principalship not only solidified my convictions but also profoundly shaped my leadership style. It was a transformative experience that inspired me to dedicate my life’s work to ensuring that leaders transition into their new roles safely, confidently, and with purpose.

I remember the moment vividly, as if it were yesterday. The day after my appointment, I was summoned to a private meeting. Thinking it was a celebration of my new role, I walked in with anticipation. But to my surprise, it was not a congratulatory gathering—it was an intervention. I was asked, “Do you need me to get you out of this appointment?”

Confused, shocked, and momentarily speechless, I searched my soul for an answer. The room was silent, and it felt like an eternity before I found my voice. With confidence, I replied, “I will be alright.” That response wasn’t just words; it was rooted in the wisdom my grandmother instilled in me: “With the Lord on your side… You will be alright!”

I was told to call if I needed anything because the school I was stepping into was "a tough one," and I would need plenty of help and support. Walking away from that conversation, I felt a mix of emotions—disappointment in the approach but determination in my purpose. I never doubted the magnitude of the challenge ahead, but the conversation fueled my resolve. I was determined to prove the naysayers wrong, focusing relentlessly on the task before me.

That moment reminded me of King Leonidas’ stand at the Battle of Thermopylae. Leonidas, facing insurmountable odds with only 300 Spartan soldiers against 500,000 Persians, declared, “No retreat, no surrender. That is Spartan law. And by Spartan law, we will stand and fight… and die.” He faced certain death but led with conviction, strategy, and unwavering courage.

As a newly appointed principal, I was called to serve a high-poverty school community that looked like me—students and families who deserved my very best and more. Inspired by Leonidas and his Spartans, I led with the courage of conviction, facing challenges head-on with strategic planning, relentless focus, and a deep commitment to excellence. And despite the doubts of others, I achieved abundant success.

This experience is why I have pledged to support and guide those who are READY to lead. Leadership is not for the faint-hearted—it requires conviction, courage, and an unwavering commitment to those you serve. For those who dare to step into this calling, I am here to walk alongside you on this journey.
